Turner Moving & Storage offers straightforward flat rate pricing for local moves in Napa, Sonoma, Solano and Marin counties. Our rates are based on our Napa minimum and include a trained crew, truck, fuel and move management, with no hidden fees or surprise charges on move day.

Every crew arrives with moving blankets, dollies, straps and the tools needed to protect your belongings and your home. Your Turner estimator will help you choose the right crew size based on your home’s size, the number of stairs or long carries involved, and any specialty items, such as pianos or wine collections.

Each package listed above reflects our four-hour minimum. Moves that run longer are billed at an hourly rate beyond that minimum, which your estimator will walk you through before booking.

Long-distance moves are priced differently, based on the weight of your shipment, the distance traveled, and the season. California law requires movers to provide a “Not to Exceed” price after a visual inspection of your belongings, either in person or through a virtual survey.

Where Would Additional Costs Arise?

If you need to store belongings for a month or more, warehouse storage costs come into play. Turner prices storage two ways: by the number of wooden storage vaults your items require, or by weight for larger shipments.

CWT: The abbreviation for hundredweight, a unit equal to 100 pounds.

Weight-based storage pricing is typically the better fit for larger shipments of 5,000 pounds or more. Your Turner estimator can help you determine which pricing method makes sense for your household or business inventory.

Turner’s storage facility spans 26,000 square feet and is temperature-stable with 24/7 surveillance. Access is available by appointment.

Additional services, like packing and unpacking, can also be added to your move. Local packing typically runs $50 to $150 per hour for a professional packing crew, with total costs ranging from $300 to $1,500 or more depending on your home’s size and packing needs. This cost will be part of your initial estimate.

Packing is handled in two ways:

If 30 cartons or fewer, there is a carton charge, and packing is billed at an hourly rate.
If there are more than 30 cartons, Turner charges for each carton and a flat rate for packing, including materials and labor.

How to Avoid Moving Scams and Unlicensed Movers

Moving scams cost consumers millions of dollars every year in the United States. California residents are not immune. Here is what to watch for before you book a mover.

Get the estimate in writing. A legitimate mover will either visit your home or complete a detailed video walkthrough before providing a firm quote. Be wary of any company that gives a binding price over the phone without seeing your belongings.

Ask for license numbers upfront. A reputable California mover should readily share its MTR number from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services for in-state moves, and its USDOT and MC numbers for interstate moves. If a company hesitates or cannot provide these, that is a red flag.

Beware of large upfront deposits. Legitimate movers typically do not require a large cash deposit before the move. Be wary of any company asking for full payment in advance or cash-only transactions.

Check for a local address and a permanent phone number. Unlicensed operators often use rented trucks, unmarked vehicles and cell phone-only contact information with no fixed business location.

Read reviews across multiple platforms. Check Google, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and industry directories rather than relying only on testimonials posted on the company’s own website.

Verify the company name matches the contract. Some unlicensed operators change business names frequently to avoid a poor reputation or unresolved complaints. Confirm the name on your bill of lading matches the company you researched.

California Moving Company Licensing Requirements

California regulates household goods movers through state and federal agencies, and legitimate companies must meet both standards.

Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS): Since July 1, 2025, the BHGS oversees all residential moving companies operating within California. Any company handling in-state moves must hold a Household Mover Permit, commonly known as an MTR number.

USDOT and MC numbers: These federal numbers are required for any move that crosses state lines. A moving company can operate under its own numbers or, if it is an agent of a national van line, under that van line’s federal authority.

Written estimates and consumer protections: California requires movers to provide a written estimate, a bill of lading for every move, and access to consumer protection guides explaining a customer’s rights.

Insurance Requirements for Legitimate California Movers

Insurance protects your belongings and your finances if something goes wrong during your move. Professional California movers are required to carry the following coverage.

Cargo insurance: This covers your belongings while they are in the mover’s care. California’s standard minimum is 60 cents per pound per article under released value protection, though Turner also offers Full Value Protection for more complete coverage on higher value items.

Commercial vehicle liability: Movers must carry commercial vehicle insurance that meets or exceeds California’s minimum liability limits, covering bodily injury and property damage if an accident occurs during transport.

General liability insurance: This protects your home and property from damage that can occur during loading or unloading, separate from the cargo itself.

Workers’ compensation: Licensed movers carry workers’ comp coverage for their crews, which protects you from liability if a mover is injured while working in your home.
